Head Teachers Go ‘Back To School’ For Innovative Leadership Programme
Leadership Excellence is delighted to announce the launch of an innovative pilot scheme of Leadership Programmes for Head Teachers and Faculty Managers in Aberdeenshire. The programme has been designed as part of a package of support for the new management structure that is being implemented throughout secondary schools in Aberdeenshire. Over 50 staff from these schools will participate in the programme, which will take place between October and February. Leadership Excellence has previously delivered a range of programmes for school pupils, from the age of 10 to 18, to help them prepare for the world of work by teaching them how to collaborate and communicate with others. Chris Travis, chief executive of Leadership Excellence comments, “Participation in the ‘Leading Structural Change’ programme will enable head teachers and faculty managers to deal with the new challenges brought about following the McCrone report and the introduction of the Determined to Succeed agenda. Key areas of learning revolve around the leadership components of communication, influence, conflict resolution and building cohesive and effective teams.” George Milne, Management and Curriculum Structure Co-ordinator of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education and Recreation Service, comments, “For an organisation to be successful it must do more that just survive, and in order for this to happen the organisation must have an effective and efficient leadership structure in place. Leaders must be able to liaise with their colleagues and engage their willing and enthusiastic involvement at all times. By fostering an environment where leaders and followers communicate and work together the organisation as a whole will benefit from receiving undivided attention. It would be unreasonable to expect that someone should automatically know how to lead when many who will be fulfilling these roles will not have had any specific leadership training; after all we would not assume that someone would automatically know how to be a teacher or a lawyer, rather we recognise that this is something that has to be learnt.” Chris of Leadership Excellence continues, “This new leadership programme will stimulate fresh thinking on the nature of leadership. It will demonstrate that modern leadership is seen as a relationship, rather than a function and series of approved behaviours. It will also address the practical challenges of the dual teacher/manager role and facilitate discussion on future practice. The experiential format of the programme is centred on active participation in exercises in which the imparted knowledge will be tested and applied in the educational environment.” Leadership Excellence offers expert programmes in behavioural safety and team development using experiential learning - a unique blend of classroom based theory and active learning at the exclusive outdoor learning facility by Thainstone. Leadership Excellence brings together the Leadership Excellence Ltd facilities – including a low and high ropes course which is one of only a few such amenities in the country – and the global training experience of Randy Smith Training Solutions.
