Mrs Janet Buchanan Smith CBE

She is the wife of the late Alick Buchanan Smith who was Member of Parliament for Kincardine and Deeside for many years and Minister of State for Agriculture from 1979-1983, and Minister of State for Energy from 1983-1987. Mrs Buchanan Smith took a great interest in her husband’s political career and they worked together in the constituency. She is still working actively in the constituency. She was awarded the C.B.E for political and public service in the New Year Honours 1993.

Since 1992 she has been a Director of the Residual Scottish Milk Marketing Board, and was a Director of the Agricultural Training Board until it was disbanded. She is still working for LANTRA, its successor. For many years she worked with young people, both in the guide movement and for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

She is currently working fundraising for a Holiday Centre for handicapped people, and also works for the Royal Blind Asylum. She also takes a great interest in the day-to-day running of the family farm at Balerno.

She has four children, three daughters and a son, and 12 grandchildren, all living reasonably close to her which she loves.
